Child in wrong family
I have found that I have entered a child into the wrong family. How can I correct this mistake and put the child where he belongs. I am using v.3
Thank you for any help.

Best to do this in the records window - otherwise once you unlink the child their box disappears in the diagram window.
Click on the relevant child and then in the Edit option click on 'unlink from' and then choose parents.
Double-click on the child to get the box up, click on the parents button to the right of the child's name then when you click in the Name line, it will ask you whether it's a new parent or a previously entered record. Click on this option and simply choose the relevant people from the list that comes up.
Hope this helps.

No problem.
I just happened to be on here at the right time.
I use F.H. a lot and have made all sorts of mistakes which I've had to learn to get out of myself - because I didn't know about this great site.

Another possible solution is detailed in the FAQ section of the Knowledge Base

Why was that, it explains how to relink any person. Does the section at the top not make it clear enough?

While I see what was being done in the example given in the Knowledge Base I do think it makes it unnecessarily complicated to have four John Smiths. It even admits this in the tips at the bottom: 'Double check you have the right one. With the Example above there are a lot of Johns to choose from.'
Yes, this does often happen in real life family trees but an example should be as clear as possible.
Could the relevant people not have been called 'John Smith' and 'James Smith'? I think it would make this clearer and easier to understand.

The great thing about the Knowledge Base/Wiki is that anyone can add or amend articles so feel free to improve it!

That's beyond my capabilities, Nick.
I can find my way round F.H. and give help but I wouldn't want to do screen grabs, etc. (are they legal, with regard to copyright issues, etc.?).

Yes Simon (Calico Pie) is happy for us to add to the knowledge base and use screen shots, etc.
It is really very straightforward to add or edit information in the wiki. Follow the links to the Editing Guide and then have a play around in the 'playground' section of the knowledge base.
