2.2 Release - comments please

The greyed out information is when you drill down on families and the person you came down from is shown again.

Eg open person open family as child display children on family.

The original person is greyed out.

Hi Peter
The fact that these numbers are individual Record IDs was my initial thought, but I'm not so sure.
If, for example, I display my wife's parents I get...of(Name)and...)Name) with a (3) displayed alongside. Whereas their individual Record IDs are 6 and 7 respectively.

Look to me to be record IDs (individual and family), if you mean the ones in square brackets next to names.

Jane,
I know what you are saying, that the greyed out text is the appearance, in the 'parents family', of the individual you are looking at. This I can see. This was a feature of FH as far back as version 2.0.7 so I am not sure that this is what is meant by that statement in the 'improvements to the Records Window'. However, what is meant I do not know.

I've installed FH and I am over the moon. The manual is the best written for any software. You feel the writer is a real person with a sense of humour but importantly knows not just the software but the subject of genealogy inside out.
ell done to everybody involved. Let's continue to make British geneological software the best in the world.

They are the record IDs for the individuals or families.

I think they were added in 2.2

I suspect not all the screen shots in the manual were updated for 2.2

I'm new to Family Historian but I can say that this is by far the best Genealogy software program around - well done!

Just bought version 2.1 and immediately upgraded to 2.2 today. No problems on the download (thank goodness for broadband though!). Only one small problem - how do I get rid of the v2.1 icon from my desktop (right click - delete doesn't work)? [confused]

It should not be locked down in any way. What does windows say when you select delete?

Also you could try dragging it into the recycle bin.

Thoroughly delighted with FH 2.2.4, though, as a new user, I can't appreciate in what ways this represents an improvement on version 2.1.

(Incidentally, I had a similar 'problem' to the person above - the icon from my FH demo version wouldn't disappear, be moved to the Recycling bin or be deleted. However, when I rebooted the PC the next day, it had disappeared.)

Prior to FH, I was using Roots Magic (demo version) and Cumberland Family Tree (demo version). They both have nice features - some of which I miss in FH and will be posting on the FH wish list in due course. Here are a few:

1) a *Graphic* Relationship Calculator (executed brilliantly in CFT)

2) a Calendar (Roots Magic, brilliant idea)

3) a List of Anniversaries, not just birthdays - some of us have to remember wedding anniversary cards as well as birthday cards! (RM)

4) Narrative reports (both CTW and RM offer this).

Overall, however, FH won the vote for me ie. it has more plus points than negative points. And neither CTW nor RM comes anyway close to FH in terms of quality of diagrams, query processing, etc. Also, I think you've got that balance just right between 'user control' (all that custom stuff IF we want to investigate it) and standard features.

Also delighted with the FHUG webpage, forums, query store - lovely lovely stuff.

In brief, FH is a marvellous program - but it could be - and will get - even better in due course!

Mike

I have just bought Family Historian after a brief play with a demo version. I received v2.1.8 in a boxed set with a 2.2.4 upgrade CD taped to the outside.
There were no instructions with the upgrade CD so, having loaded and closed down v2.1.8, I tried to load the upgrade. Being a simple soul, I thought the shiny silver side of the unlabelled CD was the active side until my PC failed even to notice it in the reader! Reversing the CD to use the dull purple side then loaded the upgrade.
Starting the programme, I opened a GEDCOM file exported from 'Family Tree Maker' and was told that the file had various errors on it. Having allowed FH to correct and verify the file I was instantly presented with the Records window showing all my family members as recorded on FTM. My immediate problem was that I could not print out this list, although I quickly found my way through the Quick Start manual to display AND PRINT an 'all relatives' diagram. Unfortunately I cannot find anything about printing in the quick start manual or the help pages - I hope to find something later when I print out the full manual.
As a new user, I find most things easy to use, and I have already done several complex updates to my data with little or no difficulty. I find the Property Dialog (oh that American spelling!) particularly easy to use and very intuitive.
On the demo version I did have one problem; I started to enter data on a child, then realised that I was entering it for the wrong person. I could delete the data with no problem, but I could not unclick the data box to return to the greyed-out box. This left an empty box on the 'all relatives' diagram (and probably elsewhere) which I could not delete. I am reluctant to try this on the full version in case I again get a blank box I cannot remove, and I can find no directions on how to correct such errors. Even something as crude as Windows 'Word' undo arrow would suffice, such that a user can backtrack to an earlier unsaved position. As a novice I feel sure that I am going to make similar errors along the way, so please, can we have some error correction notes?
Having said all this, I have to say that I am delighted with Family Historian. When I downloaded the demo, I downloaded Mormon Churches PAF 5 programme as well. I came to the conclusion that buying Family Historian would suit me better than the free PAF 5.[smile]

Dave, you can easily print a list of people using the Queries. There is one in the Query store which mirrors the Records window.

To delete a link you need to use the all tab for the family and you can then delete the link by selecting the child you do not want and pressing the delete key.

If you have any questions just post them to the usage forum and we will try to help.

The 2.2.4 CD would have been added by your supplier, as the normal update route is to download upgrades from here or from the main Family Historian site.

Just a quick note on the upgrade. Looks good and is also going in the right direction, for me.

However, FH is not all there yet. I looked at FH prior to the 2.2 release and refused to buy it because it lacked a number of features that I felt I wanted in any genealogy program worth using.

When the 2.2 demo came out, I tried it and felt that it was now just about worth paying the 50 quid for it.

But fifty pounds is a fairly large chunk of cash to part with for such a program, when there are other capable programs around at nearly half this price.

Hence, I would have expected no less than a free upgrade, had I bought the program prior to the 2.2 release, and I would have been pretty disappointed had I have had to pay an additional amount, on top, to get features that should really be considered essential in any genealogical data management program. It also does not bode well, to me, to be 'reminded' that these features were added at no additional cost.

For the record, I believe that there are still features that need to be added to FH that should follow in a further no-charge upgrade, before it starts becoming a real value-for-money product. However, as it stands, it has undoubtedly the makings of a fine product, but one that still needs further refining.

From a reliability perspective, it has been good, having only crashed twice on me, over many hours of use. Having cultured the habit of saving and backing-up frequently, this has not had a massive impact on me, although given the memory-resident nature of changed data, I could see the unwary getting caught out and possibly losing many hours work.

It may be worth noting that FH can be bought for less than £40 on Amazon and at just over £40 on My history. My history also send a CD with the upgrade on in, with thier copy

As a novice I have been using a freebie version of Family Tree v6 for a couple of years and a few weeks ago decided to splash out on an upgrade but in the end opted for the Family Historian 2.2 program having tried the trial version.

After installing the full programme I was amazed at how easy it was to import the Family Tree data which up to now I have found to be spot on . The message is don’t be concerned about date integrity if you move to Family Historian.
