Unmarried relationships

Post by Colin_Herbert » 26 Nov 2006 21:27

Hello,
New to FH3 but VERY impressed with it. I seem to have found my way around but have one problem that I cannot find the answer in the FAQ or in this Forum.

In two cases in my tree there are situations where a two people live together (male and female) but are not actually married. In one case they happen to be 1st Cousins and lived together as man and wife. In the other case one is a lifetime lodger in the other's home. There are no children from either relationship.

Thes people are very important and I would like to represent them on diagrams and in reports. I have them in the database as 'Married' at the moment to make things work in the diagrams but this causes problems when I want to print, for example, a list of relations for one of the cousins (cousin siblings are displayed as 'In-Laws').

I have looked at the 'Associated Person' method but this does not disply the person that is associated in a diagram.

This must be a very common situation in this modern age where two people live together but remain unmarried, although I accept it would not have been when GEDCOM was defined.

Is there a way to show such important relatonships as married relationships are shown on diagrams, but with a different kind of line link (not the double lines) and with the data in the database accepting that they are two individuals that are NOT married?

If you set the Status of the relationship to 'Never Married', 'Unmarried Couple' or 'Unknown' they will be linked by a dotted double line.  If set to 'Divorced' the link will have a diagonal crossing line.

Unmarried relationships

Hi,

I tried this but it doesn't seem to make any difference to the line style. Do I start with a spouse or an an assoaciated person, but these are not displayed in a diagram?

If I start with a person, what are the steps to get the 'friend' associated an then the status shown correctly?

Colin,

I would always use an Unmarried Spouse for any long term 'proven' relationships. Personally I only use associated persons for single sex relationships. With V3 you can always add people and lines on by adding another tree to a diagram, even if that tree only has on box on it, good for associated persons.

For now simply set the status, reports should show the status.

Hi,

Thanks again but I still have the problem. How do I show such people on a diagram? I tried what Mike has said and it doesn't work. Should it work? That would be the best way.

Reports aren't the issue yet but I hear what you say. I also see what you say about adding a diagram but that's a bit of a workaround.

So main question is, is Mike correct in what should happen?

As you may have noticed the option to customise the line style based on the status is available in Version 3.1
