';Events recorded'; fields

Can anyone tell me whether the Date and Place fields in the Events recorded section should refer to the date/place where the event was recorded or the date/place where the event actually happened ? (e.g. on a birth certificate should it be the date/place of the actual birth or the date/place of the registry of the birth ?)

For certs I use the date and place of the event (born 12 july 2007 at Bristol Infirmary) and then put other information in the notes - and for the parents put in their house address in their events records.

Thanks for the reply SunnyLady ... I'm still a bit confused by all these fields which seem to duplicate ...

In the Source there is a Data->Events Recorded->Date, then there is the Entry Date when you/auto-citation attaches a source to a particular individual. Then of course there is the actual date of the event itself and similarly there is the Actual Text of the Source and the Text from Source in the attachment of the Source to the Event [confused]

Meanwhile, I have a copy of a birth certificate which shows when the copy was made, when the birth was registered and when the birth actually happened! I feel like I'm drowning in dates when all I really want is the DoB [confused] (but at the same time I want to do it 'properly' so I don't end up re-doing it later if I miss stuff out)

Also (sorry this is so long!) I want to use the auto-citation but if I put all the text from the certificate in the Actual Text then it copies this into every Event (which seems to duplicate a heck of a lot given that it's already be in the Source->Actual Text). But conversely if I just put the snippet that is relevant to a particular usage (e.g. birth event, husbands name etc) then I have to change it for everything I link it to which negates the benefit of the auto-citation. [confused] I guess maybe the best way here is just to leave the auto-citation 'Actual Text' blank and manually enter snippets for each Event link?

Do you create a new source for each certificate, if so you can put all the details in the source record and just cite the source in Auto Source.

Did you try looking at the Entering Data from a Birth Certificate How To?

Yes I do create a new source for each certificate and realise I could put it all in there but hence then not sure what is left to put in the other areas ?

Yes I did look at the How To Enter Birth Certificate (in fact I've just gone though it again to make sure I didn't miss anything hehe) but in that example the Source-Data and Entry Date are not used or mentioned.

I think I have 2 basic questions:

1. Can I assume that the Source->Data->Events Recorded is to put the actual events or should it be when the events were recorded or should I just leave it blank and use the Text From Source instead?

2. Is the Entry Date intended to be the date of the event, the date the event was recorded or the date I am entering it in FH ?

Many Thanks for your help!

You may find it useful to read about this in the Knowledge Base Wiki article about Sources [wiki]glossary:sources[/wiki].

The trick is not to feel that all of the fields have to be filled in. There are lots of fields provided to cater for different ways that users record data but generally you only use some of them.

If you are recording all of the details within the source then generally you won't record very much within the citation record. However, some people would just make the source 'Birth Certificates' (or similar) and have everyone's birth details linking to that source. Then they would record the details of the date of the birth certificate (or perhaps the date of registration, it is up to you) in the citation, the certificate code in the 'where in source' field, etc. The problem with using this method (and the main reason I don't like it) is that it does lead to duplication with this information being recorded within each citation.

I think the answer seems to be do whatever you fancy hehe!
