Research Log

Post by cath196 » 26 Oct 2006 19:06

I would like to see a research log for each individual that can be used to record what research has been done, when and comments about it plus what research you intend to do in future.  Would like to be able to set up 'research archives' eg a particular church's parish records, make a research note on the individual that want to check the parish records for a particular event that is linked to this 'archive record' (a bit like sources) so that can create reports either of all research to be undertaken in one research archive or all archives to be researched for a specific individual.  Have tried using notes in the past but frustrates me that if I'm doing a report for someone I have to strip out these notes manually as need to review whether it's a research or 'life' note.
regards
Cath

Can't you use Named Lists for this?

I have a list for each repository I use adding the people I need to work on with a note in the list to say what I need to check. Then all I have to do is print the named list report before I go.

I also have one for outstading GRO orders, and certificates I need to order when funds allow.

Jane
Hadn't thought about using lists that way. How do you record against the individual that you checked a particular repository and didn't find anything for example to avoid repeated searches in same repository without it being a note on their record that would appear in reports generated?

Pending Jane's method  (which may appear on the Wiki maybe?) I would support a 'research log' which perhaps could also be used for those odd jottings that occur to one - not direct information that one has researched but the negative and emphemera (questions arising from research and what to look for - not just where one has been to search), which might be easier for those of us who are not as computer literate as many here.    Could it be a tab on the properties box maybe?

As I see it there are a couple of ways.

1. To use private notes with double [ ] which by default do not print. This is what I do for logging things I have checked against couples etc. I do this quite a bit for my elusive ancestors.

They they appear on the Notes Tab and if you make the first line Research then its easy to spot your 'thoughts' note on the notes tab.

2. To use custom attributes for research, attaching a note and the relevant source, and modifying the reports which normally pick up everything to omit the research event.

Great idea Cath! I'd love one too - it would be especially good to be able to record the outcomes - not just the successes but also the failures ie can't find so-and-so in Birth Index or whatever.
