Entering Birth Certificate

Post by BobBowman » 15 Oct 2006 01:11

The 'How To' on entering a birth certificate as a source is very helpful but a bit unrealistic. I purchase a birth certificate because I already have some information about an ancestor and possibly their parents, but it is incomplete. So one or more of the individuals is already entered in my tree. Starting with none of the ancestors present in the tree is not really feasible, so I would like to add the correct citations manually. The 'How To' ends up with nine citations of the birth certificate as a source. I can see that four of them would be the birth events for the individual, father, mother, and family, and one would be the occupation event for the father. What are the other four citations?

I was just trying to show a good starting place. If you already have most of the information from other sources you may not need so many citations for one cert.

Ok lets see if I can find them all.

A. Albert Jack
1 Name
2 Whole Record Source
3 Birth Source
B. Francis Susan
4 Whole Record Source
5 Name
C. Henry Charles
6 Whole Record Source
7 Name
8 Occupation
D. Family as parents
9 Whole Record

Thanks, that's a big help, especially as I had missed the obvious.

Along similar lines, what citations would be expected for a marriage certificate and a death certificate?

A death cert does not usually yield much other than the death event so possibly could be a little as 1 citation.

However you may want to add a
Residence event, possibly an Informant custom attribute for the notifying person and possibly an address/residence for the informant.

For a marriage cert. Probably
Family
1. Marriage Event
Groom
Residence at time of marriage
Could also be Brides Name
Whole Record
Bride
Residence at time of marriage
Could also be Brides Name
Whole Record
Grooms Father
Name
Whole Record
Brides Father
Name
Whole Record

Thanks for highlighting this Bob. I have just realised that I have not been adding source citations to the 'Whole Record Source'.
Jane, do you have every source for each record listed under the Whole Source Record (including census citations) or do you just use this for BMD citations?
Thanks for your help

I normally only put whole record where it's the first/main source of proof.

So if a child is added from a census that will be the whole record source, if I then get a birth certificate for the person I will use that as well, I wouldn't add additional census sources to the whole record, or add sub-sequent childrens birth certificates to the parents whole source.

My own personal aim with sources, is to allow someone to see where I first joined family members together.

You could also have occupation citations for the bride and groom, and both fathers.
Related witnesses could also have the marriage as a source?
