I understand that there isn't a timeline feature to FH. However I wonder if anyone has developed any custome reports for major historical events. An example would be a custon report showing everyone who lived through a particular war. Or anyone from Ireland who may have been effected by the potato famine. Does anyone have any examples like this?

I use Genelines to do this, plus an old copy of Timeline maker. You can do some nice reports in genelines which are completely different from those in FH.

By the way its fairly easy to write a query requesting a date range and to compute anyone likly to be living. In addition you could subset for example by those with 'Ireland' in their text somewhere.

Just been looking for all references to timelines. The package mentioned looks good but is another $30. This plus an investment in mapping software starts to make FH a more expensive investment than I originally intended. Then again £7 certificates soon add up!

Is there a roadmap for FH anywhere? I.e. what can we expect when? When is v4?...

Have now had a look at http://www.timelinemaker.com. The product seems good but adds another $50 to the shopping list![frown]

Timeline Maker and Genelines are from the same company so I suppose its only if you need the extras in Timeline Maker.

I would be interested to hear more on your experiences with Timeline Maker and Genelines 2.1 Universal Ed..

I hadn't been aware of Genelines, and when I went searching for timeline software, found Timeline Maker and have had their free demo Pro version for a while. It is a very neat and flexible product but I couldn't see how to best use it in conjunction with genealogy software without either manually inputting the data or creating .csv files based on specific queries and importing into TMPro. Having now quickly looked at the Genelines webpage it seems that program does exactly that, allows you to match gedcom data with external 'social history' timeline files (which is what I was initially after) and also allows family pedigree timeline charting.

However, I wonder if the charting flexibility and Presentation capabilities of Genelines is as great as with Timeline Maker Pro. Since both come from Progeny I would have thought they would share more of their capabilities? Am I missing something in the way Timeline Maker Pro could be used in conjunction with genealogy software or is it just a 'horses for courses' situation and TMPro is more directed at Office/Business applications?

Sorry, this should probably be directed at Progeny software and is probably a bit off topic for the FH site except that, like RalfofAmber, my 'ideal' would be to know where FH is heading in its next incarnation? Inbuilt timeline charting capability would be grand, especially if it would allow blending with external history timelines! If that is not in the forseeable developments, then I'll have to get an external software option.

Timeline Maker Pro is quite expensive, but I would be sorely tempted if it could be used flexibly with gedcom files in a way that Genelines seems to offer. Any experiences of FH users greatly appreciated.

I've recently purchased genelines as i wanted to be able to show a persons life in context with historical events

But unlike Janes example above all i see for residence/occupation sections is the words residence/occupation than than the actual address/job

Have i entered my data wrongly in FH? or am i missing something please?

From memory I think I customised the line, but can't remember how, I am just in the process of rebuilding my main home PC, so once that is done I will re-install Genelines and take a look for you.

I have loaded it up and it worked first time, I had to get down V2.1 as V2 does not work under Vista.

Just tried the chart above and it looks pretty well the same.

If you select the person and then click on the Occupation button, what do you see in there? If it looks OK I would post a question to the Genelines forum at http://progeny.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=108

Just been thru the faq for genelines and found i had to edit the categories so it showed notes for occupation and place for residence. By default it just used the event type

I have just bought genelines but I amhaving a slight problem.
Genelines seems to be using old data when I open my gedcomfile.
If I make cahnegs in Family Historian they are not reflected in genelines.
Its as though genelines is using cahed data.
Has anyone else seen this

I don't see the problem, but you do need to close Genelines and re-open to get it to open the gedcom file again, just opening the same file name with out closing does not do anything.

I have triedthat but to no avail.
If Iimport the gedcom to lagacy that sees it ok.
If I then use genelines that sees it Ok too.
I just cant my head around what is happening
