Loss of  info upon reformatting hard drive

Recently my computer hard drive was reformatted. This has led to some losses. In Family Hisorian the losses I can see immediately are:-
1. upon opening Family Historian my main Gedcom file used to open automatically, I think this was actioned quite easily but I cannot remember what I did.

2. As my tree contains both my info and my husbands info I had a column with tick boxes showing who belonged to which side. I cannot remeber how I did this.

Any help in setting the above up again would be appreciated.

Regards

1. upon opening Family Historian my main Gedcom file used to open automatically.
Just select tools/preferences and the load/save tab, and set the current file as default.
2. As my tree contains both my info and my husbands info I had a column with tick boxes showing who belonged to which side. I cannot remeber how I did this.
I presume you have a couple of lists one for your family and one for your husbands. If so just right click to edit your columns to include the two lists. The Lists Demo in the How To's will refresh your memory on this one.

Thank you Jane,

I have now managed to retrieve both columns, I also had another column which told me the spouses of each individual, please can you point me in the right direction again?

Take a look at the How to For Adding a column to the records window.

Once you get it as you want you can use the save as Query option to export your columns to a file, then if you rebuild again you can simply import the query.

If you have version 3, there are menu options to export queries etc.

Or you can simply backup the application data directory for calic pie, which is normally

Code: Select all

Thank you for your help Jane, I think I am nearly there with all that I have lost. I do have version three so will try to remember to export what I can. At least all the data and photographs are intact. I hope we do not have to reformat the disk again.

Rebuilding machines always takes a while, last time I did mine took a couple of evenings just to put all the software back on. FH was not too bad, as I had a copy of the application directory, but everything else took a while.
