'Touching up' old documents

Hi,

I wondered if any body had tips about 'touching up' old documents. Most genealogy books show copies from old parish registers which look as clear as the day they were written. I have tried improving the quality of the grey background of many of mine, but haven't found a quick or satisfactory method.

I would like to send relatives cd's of my research, but many parish records when for example printed fron fiche and then scanned  are of such poor quality

Many thanks

Alan

Do you have a photo editing package like Photoshop Elements, I have found using the levels option in PSE can often be a great help in getting ride of grey backgrounds, by pulling the white pointer in.
