Cause of Death

Post by JulieG » 26 Aug 2006 22:57

I have recently obtained a death certificate for my 2 x great grandmother in 1855. The cause of death is shown as 'Unknown, not certified'. Can anyone please tell me under what circumstances this may have occurred and why her death was not certified? I'm intrigued now to find why my ancestor died at the age of 27 four months after giving birth.

Many thanks,

Cause of Death

Prior to 1874 a doctor's certificate was not required in order for a death to be registered. I have a number of death certificates where the death is not certified, but none where the cause is unknown.
