* Which name to use?

I have read several threads on Adoption but I am still unsure how you record the change of name!

Do you create a new person?

I have the same query for someone who changed their name by Deed Poll and then married and had children!

I would appreciate any help.

NO never create more than one record for a single person.

Simply enter the second name using the All tab right click on the person and add another name. Add sourcing information to show they changed it and if you want a create a custom event for a deed poll change.

Once two names are created you can control which one it the primary name by using the sequencing curved arrows to move one or the other names to the top of the persons detials.

It would be nice if when the Birth Father had the focus in a diagram, it showed his sons birth name!

The quick way to do this when printing diagrams is to just open the properties diagram and re-order the names for the son, the diagram will reflect the first name in the person, alternatly you could change the name line to use +1 and it will then show all the names for a person on the diagram.

What do you mean, +1 Jane? I must confess that I've set myself up twice in my main tree - as birth and adopted names which seems to have caused all sorts of problems. I noticed that Tombaston had shown a screen-grab concerning adoptions etc. but I couldn't replicate for 'myselves' as it were!

On the name field on the text scheme you should be able to change the NAME line to show all occurences, by ticking the box or using the [+1] index option on the expression.
