Printing the Manual

Post by Brownlow » 29 Jul 2006 15:18

Hi
I'm having difficulty printing the manual.

Problem occurs where there is outdented text to highlight a section. One example of many is on page 67 (page 81 as calculated by Adobe Reader).

- the outdent text
'Text:
Content,
Font and
Style'
.. prints as displayed on screen

- the following outdent text
'Figure 16
The Text tab of the Diagram Options
dialog. The current text scheme is
“Birth, Marr, Death”. '
.. loses most of the first two lines.

- The Title part of the screen shot is also missing from the printout

- something similar happens further down the page with
'Diagram Options
Dialog'
.. and many other places throughout the manual and index.

Equipment: 1.5 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM; OS: Windows 2000 Professional
with all patches and updates installed; Adobe Acrobat version 7.0.0; HP
2108 All-in-one printer with driver and firmware updates.

Is this a problem with with Adobe v7.0, or with whatever you use to generate the pdf files, or perhaps the word processor?

May I add that in its unprinted form the manual is generally excellent
and first impressions of software (it arrived yesterday) equally good.

Thanks for any help

Check you 7.0.7 at least and the latest printer drivers.

My History do an excellent printed copy of the manual which is a good buy, if you factor in the folder and the cost of ink.

My copy looks fine from them so I would suspect its a problems with Acrobat and your printer drivers, especially as it looks fine on screen on your computer.

Thanks Jane but ...

1)   as mentioned in my posting, I already installed the latest drivers and even firmware for the printer, and all current OS patches over SP4.
2)   you include Acrobat Reader version 5.0.5 on the FH CD. I already have version 7.0.0, what's the sudden reason to upgrade?
3)   the download for version 7.0.8 from is 27.7 MB - not practical for me, it will take all day.
4)   the ink is already on the paper. Ink and paper together probably cost me £2 and I get it today. Your book costs about £19.95 and I have to wait until Tuesday. This is supposed to be a hobby, I want to play over the weekend.

Every other pdf file I print with this combination of drivers, hardware and software - including my own software manuals - comes out fast and perfect.

It's only your manual that stops the printer for 30 seconds half way down the the page while it goes into a loop, skips several lines of text and part of a screen shot, then does it again a few lines later.

If the problem lies with your manual, I just thought you'd like to know.

Regards

FYI Jane is not an employee of Calico Pie so it is not her manual or her software. Jane is an enthusiastic user who maintains this site for the benefit of other FH users. Any advice she or anyone else on this site gives is their own time.

I have Acrobat 5.0.1 (can't be bothered to upgrade) on my PC and it prints no problem. Obviously I wouldn't recommend you downgrade, but is there any other PC or printer you can access to print from? As Acrobat allows you to print single pages it may be worth trying a known problem page to see if it's ok in a different set up.

I have not seen this problem reported before here or on the mailing list. So was assuming it was a problem with your combination of Acrobat and printer driver. I suspect the fact the Acrobat 7.0 has had so many updates is that there were problems with the rendering engine with some printer combinations. If you want to report this to Calico it is best to send an email to their support department.
