I want to create a query that gives me the same results as Tools, Work with Data, Places when you click on Records, but I want to see the results for all places, or for a selection, not just one at a time. I don't know where to start.

Place Query
If you do all places you will just see everyone in the tree!
If you want to do a query to find say everyone with Somerset in their
file the easiest way is to do a query using the V3 =containstext
function and searching for Somerset.
