literacy of ancestors

Post by vickyh » 07 Jul 2006 17:49

On many certificates I've seen that the person is obviously illiterate because they've signed with a cross and it says 'the mark of...'

I wondered whether it would be interesting to note this in an individual's record.
What would be the best way of doing this?

Thanks

I've made a custom attribute - illiterate - and record it like that. I've also assigned a flag with icon, so I can track 'literacy' progress easily on charts.

literacy of ancestors

On the details tab in the education field I write 'none-could not write his/her name'. In other cases I write 'could write his name' since this is often the only indication we have that they had any education. From census returns if a person is described as a scholar then I assume they went to school.
