Half-siblings - more problems

Post by frank_spooner » 17 Nov 2003 17:35

Having read through the thread on half-siblings started by dolbyjones in July of this year - I was having the same problems - and applying the suggested solutions, all the children appear but not on the correct level in the All Relatives diagram. In the all relatives diagran, centred on a child of the first relationship the children of the second reletionship are displayed as 1st Cousins !!!!!!!! and vice versa. I think that they should appear on the same line as those from the first relationship as do the brothers and sisters of the 'centred child'. Also when the diagram is centred on another relative - a decendant of one of the relationships the children of the other relationship still do not appear on the correct lines, again showing as cousins.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Have you also read the two articles called Complex Families in the FAQ section?

You may also need to check that you have the 'prefered' family listed first for the sibblings.

Half-siblings - more problems

Thank you I had not seen these but having read them the issue I have is that the children are shown on the diagram but they are not shown at the correct level - when centering diagram on the common parent the children of the first wife are shown as children but the children of the second wife appear as cousins which they obviously are not. The family is actually one of my ancestors so when the diagram is centred on me the problem still occurs. I have this problem a number of times in my diagram.

This sounds like you may have the linking wrong.

Please can you confirm you have checked that the 'father' has two families as spouse and if you center on the Father all children are shown as such.

I can think of no reason they would show on the line above in most cases they will not show at all.

If you could upload a screen capture of the family on the diagram and in the expanded record window I may be able to spot the problem.

Jane I have posted two screen prints the first is with the second wife Ann positioned first as suggested in one of the answers in the previous thread and on with the first wife Mary positioned first. Robert the husband is a direct ancestor to myself. We have noticed that when this situation occurs with an ancestor that is not in direct line the positioning of the children is correct.

Frank

you are quite right that in All Relatives diagrams, half-siblings line up with cousins.  If you look at the last page of the Quick Start Tutorial you will find in the section on Relationship Descriptions an acknowledgement that 'they don't properly account for 'half' relatives'.

Laying out 'All Relatives' diagrams is a complicated business, and the various different ways of doing it tend to involve compromises of one kind or another.  The positioning of half-siblings was one such compromise.  However, we are fully persuaded that it would be very desirable to be able to line up half-siblings with siblings and are hoping to do something about this, but I'm afraid I can't tell you when.
