Correct use of ';Place Hierarchy';

Post by jconnochie » 08 May 2006 08:02

I have been wondering what the correct use of the place hierarchy field is.  I have used it to record a nice compact place description using Chapman codes... eg a census event may be at Tain, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland, and I will add a place hierachy of SCT, ROC, Tain, which I find easy to use in charts and columns.
I do worry from time to time that this might cause problems if it is not an intended use

It's not an option I use, and I have been unable to make much sense of the GEDCOM standard which discusses it's use.

I would not expect it to cause any problems for you though.

Thanks Jane,

I shall carry on. I got my version 3 yesterday (it took a bit of time to get out to New Zealand) and am on another burst of activity.

Mark - do you have any Mitchells, McLeods or ROSSes (silly question - everyone has ROSSes up there!)

Yes, every other family is a Ross :-) They are all common surnames as you would expect. There are a couple of Ross and Mitchell families in our village.
