Census By Year (V3) amp; GedCom Census

Post by tithepit » 04 May 2006 20:41

I've been trying out the new Census By Year (V3)query and am very impressed with the helpful output. Then I noticed that some census records did not appear in the report although they are clearly in the database. Upon investigation I realise that older census data copied from other packages or entered by hand in my early usage of FH were displaying correctly. More recent census data entered via GedCom Census was apparently missing.
As far as I can see this is because older records have census data added against the tag 'Census' while later data uses the more explicit tag names 'Census1841', 'Census1851' etc. I beleive that this is due the fact that the records were created by GedCom census and I like this style.
I suspect that the problem with the query could be fixed by amending the syntax of the query but I'm not nearly experienced enough to do this myself. Any chance of an amended version which would select either style against the correct year?

Census By Year (V3) amp; GedCom Census

The query doesn't make reference to the sources, just to the census events. Gedcom Census certainly creates the necessary census events for this query to work. It works fine for me.

I assume you do have version 3 of Family Historian?

You sound as it you have been using custom events for census.

The new query was not designed for that situation.

You should be able to add additional columns by selecting them from the data reference table on the left of the query window.

I have never used custom events although I know John Hanson recommended them as an option, I didn't think GedCom Census used them, do it Nick as an option?

No you're right Jane, Gedcom Census doesn't use custom events. I would have thought Richard would find that census records entered via Gedcom Census would be the ones that would be shown by the query rather than the other way round.

There doesn't seem to be any reason that I can think of to use custom events for different census years which is why Gedcom Census doesn't support them.

Jane & Nick,
Of course you are correct in your interpretations of what is going on here - and the fact that I have reversed the situation as to what GedCom is recording with what my earlier software must have created.
Looking on the positive side I can now use the Census by Year query not only to highlight reatives where census data appears to be lacking but also those individuals for whom the Census data is recorded as custom events and to correct them as necessary.
Thanks to both of you for responding so clearly and promptly.
BTW what a wonderful tool Gedcom Census is proving to be - I can't think how anyone, with the proliferation of census data these days, manages to enter all the necessary updates without it!
Kind Regards,
Richard
