Because I only have the reduced size version of my own Birth certificate I sent for the G.R.O version and found an interesting remark in column seven under my fathers name and address as informant. This reads 'as per declaration dated 12 January 1940'. The date of registration is 15/01/1940. I've asked my father if he remembers anything about it but at 89yrs of age , it's asking a lot.
I did wonder if it was because he was in a 'protected occupation' at the time  or is it simply that Mom and Dad were living with his parents. My actual date of birth was 17/12/1939. Any ideas please.

I wonder if he did not actually go to the Register Office in person but sent someone else (maybe one of your grandparents) with the declaration that he was you father. Seems strange in that case that your mother didn't go to register you though. Even though he was in a protected occupation he may well have been away and unable to go himself. My grandfather was in a reserved occupation (welding Spitfires back together) and was frequently away according to my father.

I believe this was because your father went to register the birth in a district other than the one the birth took place in. The registrar then passed on the info in the form of a declaration to the correct district.
