Private records

Post by simon_phillips_81669 » 26 Oct 2003 22:06

I would like to have the facility to make records private or hidden so that if I upload a gedcom file to a public internet site I can prevent certain records from being seen, eg because I haven't got the permission of a living person in my tree to allow me to publish their name.  I don't want to maintain two gedcom files, hence the request.

One possible way you can do it currently, is to create a Custom Attribute for Living, then when ready to upload to the web, configure a Query to omit all the people with a 'hidden' flag and use the Split tree function to delete them all.

Personally I do something very similar, but have a query which removes anyone more than 2 generations from my husband or my Ancestors and use phpgedviews privacy feature to hide living peoples details where they are still living, except where someone signs in and is closely related to the person signed in.

My problem is a little different but I do require that my scanned-in data (certificates, newspaper cuttings etc) should be linked to a person for ease of research.
What could give offence or misunderstandings are the different laws affecting marriage/non-marriage, heritance and NATURAL children as in France. This is further complicated by close relations being BASQUE and, now, Greek.
I do require a switch on/off of all multimedia and anything that might be construed as proof of heritage.
I would rather be over-careful thattoo loose with unconfirmed data hence all the scanning.
In the meantime I shall NEVER embed in or out of bed information - sorry I could not resist that one!

Your family sounds like a good challenge. It you are sending data to other people the 'split tree' option can strip out all multimedia and notes prior to sending so may help when sharing data. Just remember to make a copy of the file before using it.

Another possibility for the original request is to use a List for all 'Private' people. Then create a query selecting all the people in the list and use the split tree option to make a new version of the file ready for upload.
