Meaning of ';al.';

I'm currently reading a book on the history of the Laws in Lancashire, and the author makes several mentions of people with two surnames separated by 'al.'

e.g 'Butterworths al Jenkyn crop up there for the next sixty years. John Lord al. Jenkyn lived to be over 90...'

He could be quoting verbatim from Court Rolls, but its hard to tell from the context.

Can anyone tell me what this means please?[confused]

Just a guess but alias sems to fit the context.

Thanks Martin, yes it could be alias. In which case what is the author trying to say? If they were females he was referring to then I would assume he was referring to married and maiden names, but here he's referring to males.
