Creating a Website

Post by rfj1001 » 30 Mar 2006 17:19

I fancy creating a website but would prefer to have no living relatives on it at all - other than immediate family whose permission I have. Given that I have over a thousand people in total in the file, is there an automated way that I can do some shortcuts - eg set up a query to run a subset of people born before 1900 and use that subset to set a flag of, say, 'Not Living' against each person and then use that flag to help create the website.

If someone could post more detailed instructions on how to do it then that would be great.

TIA

Robin

First set the private flag on your living people, there are several queries in the query store to help you find them and set the flag from the query, once done you can fine tune the flag.

Then when you output the web site simply tick the exclude Private option and make sure any table of contents items you add manually do not need to use living people, ie do not start an ancestor diagram with yourself.

Thanks Jane,

But how do I set flags for a single person - it must be so obvious I'm missing it.

One way in the records window is to right click on the person, select add flag and select the flag you want to add.

Another quick question re creating a website.  If you make a website during one session and subsequently wish to make a small change (like to the logo, for example) how do you access the details you have previously spent a lot of time setting up (like a long detailed Table of Contents with customised Reports and Tables etc.).  I could only make it start from scratch again.  Probably it's something really simple...   By the way, I have really been enjoying diagrams which get rid of the duplicates, the Ancestors by Generation thingy + also the website.  Finally, would it be easy to incorporate the website into a website I have been creating using Net Objects Fusion, so that the one produced in Family Historian was just a part of the overall site?   I don't know how to use HTML.

I think you will find it remembers all the options you used from session to session.

I don't use NetObjects, but you should be able to access the template html somewhere and use the header and footer information in the advanced section of the website generator.

HTML is really simple especially if you are only cutting and pasting existing code so the process should not be too painful.

In a couple of weeks when things have calmed down a bit if you send me a link to your existing site I can problably work out what you need to do.

I feel a fool, but I cannot find how to create a website. I'm running 2.3.5, and neither in the help nor on the official website can I find details. How do I get started?
Thanks,
Benedict

Hi Benedict

Website creation is a feature which has appeared in version 3 which came out last week which is why you won't see it in your version.

Cheers

Nick
