gedcom problems?

Post by laracroft » 22 Mar 2006 11:15

I have a problem with either my family historian load or a problem with my Gedcom file. I have been using a rather old programme Softkey Family tree v1.5 originally, and exported it to FH.I have around 500 names on my file and have been checking the transfer of my data and I have noticed that sometimes I have a double up in the spouse family or parents field, a droppout of siblings to parents, OR when I right click on a name then choose properties the programme thinks for ages then comes up with (FH not responding) I have to then close which it struggles on, then the Microsoft error message comes up telling me to report a problem. I have updated this file too far before I noticed this is a real problem - so I don't want to loose my Gedcom file. I have FH 2.3.5 awaiting my V3, is there a patch I can load? Gutted really, please help. [frown][cry]

I suspect the file you imported is corrupt in some way. As gedcom is just a text file, it should be possible to track down the problem and resolve it.

Have you run the validate file option over the file?

Did you remove all un-recognised data when you loaded it?

Have you tried re-sequencing / renumbering the records?

I have only ever seen FH misbehave when the imported file has errors in it.

From memory, it will detail all the errors to a file which you can print out.

I would make sure you have a safe copy of the file, just use save as to make a new copy of your file to work on.

seems to be running much better just by validating the file, could of done that at the beginning but was a bit scary. Going through the data now. so thanks for that.

gedcom problems?

Have had a similar problem myself. Tried to merge file X into my main file A.  Went through the process of merging & selecting the fields and info.
Merge seemed to go OK but I ended up with A merged with X, + A, + X.
My 150 family datebase ended up with 450 families all linked. Trying to delete the extra families sometimes deleted the ones I wanted to keep. Solved the problem by doing it the hard way started with a copy of my original file A and typed in the info from file x.

When using the merge you do need to check and confirm exactly what you need to happen, FH does show you, but from experience I know you need to check the results, it can also be a good idea to split off from the merge from file down to just what you want to add.
