please could someone explain what this means, I have tried a search on the computer but am none the wiser.
'a cadet of the family of....' hopefully it means there is a dormant account somewhere with loads of money just waiting for me[wink]

Dictionary.com says that cadet can mean 'A younger son or brother' or 'youngest son'.

It will usually mean a branch of the family descended from a younger son - i.e. not the main descent line. A cadet branch could have become significant, acquiring land through marriage for example, so you might be lucky!

wow thanks, in this case I think it must mean of a younger son, as the name is the same. As the old family pile appears to be still standing I should have some luck researching, if I inherit the house I'll give a good party and invite all you kind people who have helped me so much (not likely, sadly)[grin]
