Importing data from Family Tree Maker

Am completely new to Family Historian. I have found some problems with migrating from FTM. The main one is that notes attached to marrriages in FTM seem to get lost in FH. I have managed to identify some of them in the records list and have then had to reattach them to the right person through his/her property box. Is this a known problem? No such problem seems to occur when the same GEDCOM is read by Pocket Genealogist, so I would assume that the GEDCOM itself must be OK. Does anyone have any comment please?

I had no problems. However the FTM gedcom is no where near correct, you will find for example it exports all occupations as places.

I have not seen the problem with marriage notes, but I can look at the file if you want me too. I suspect that FTM exports it incorrectly.

Did you export the file for FTM or for PAF, most people find the PAF or standard export is more sucessful.

Thanks - Yes I have found the difficulty with occupations and have started to rectify them manually - alas the knock on problem when I export my FH Gedcom to Pocket Genealogist, I then lose that data. I imagine that is a problem for Northern Hills Software who have not so far included any modficatio to feal with FH gedcoms. All very annoying as I had imagined that I could exchange data between all 3 programs. As FTM and PG work perfectly together I may have to postpone migration to FH. I have managed to locate the marriage notes link - they appear in the properties box under spouse's family. My version of FTM only gives 2 options for GEDCOMS -normal GEDCOM and Gedcom for DOS - no mention of PAF.

Hi, I use PG with Family historian no problem. I will double check the Occupations, but I am sure they are there correctly.

I will send you an e-mail via the site to provide you my e-mail address if you want to send me a sample file. Although I will not have much time prior to the weekend to look at it.

Colin, I am still working on the problem as PG works fine for me.

I think the problem with occupations is that when FTM export them it exports them as EVEN (Events) rather than as OCCU for occupations. When I converted my data I fixed these problems using my GEDFIX program. I am waiting for confirmation, but I think Miles may have simply moved the Occupation text to a note field against a Event with a type of occupation.

Sorry if this sounds complicated.
Below is the lines which should be used for a occupation based on the GEDCOM standard.

1 OCCU Builder
2 DATE AFT 1975
1 OCCU Farm Machinery Salesman
2 DATE BEF 1975
2 PLAC DOR and Somerset

FTM exports the above as

1 EVEN
2 TYPE Occupation
2 PLAC Farm Machinery Salesman
2 Date BEF 1975

I think what Miles has done is to move the PLAC data to a NOTE field, but not converted the 1 EVEN.

So he has
1 EVEN
2 TYPE Occupation
2 NOTE Farm Machinery Salesman
2 Date BEF 1975

PG shows the Type and the date and place for custom events and not the NOTE.

The short answer if your data was entered in FH it will be fine.

Thanx Jane, I can confirm I have now imported the gedcom from FH into my Compaq Pocket PC and it has worked fine, the problem must lie with the other user.

Thanx again Jane.

I'm working on a GEDCOM import 'profile' for Family Historian (for Pocket Genealogist) and will have a new 'Public Beta' ready by this evening which will include this profile.  I've already made some changes to the program such as the ability to have Notes attached to Parents to better support Family Historian.

You can find out more info about the Public Beta here:
