Change of occupation
Apologies if this one's been mentioned before. Whether this is anything to do with the GEDCOM Census Editor (GCE) I don't know. I noticed that several of my individuals have the occupation of 'Scholar'. This has obviously been picked up from the GCE entry. I tried changing one to 'Saddler', which I now know from a later census to be the main occupation for this individual but in doing so it changed his event for the year that he was a Scholar to Saddler. I thought I could (rather long-windedly) get round the problem by changing the event back to Scholar but that changed the occupation back to Scholar again on the main tab of the individual's property dialog. I seem to remember deleting Scholar from a lot of records a few months back, which in turn would have changed the census event from Scholar to nothing for the relevant individuals. Also I've probably changed Scholar in the past to the correct job so I could possibly have three year old train drivers in my census events! Is there a way round all of this?

I presume you are talking about the occupation on the details tab. Personally I ignore that tab.
The simplest solution is to use the Events tab which shows all occupations.
There is a wish list item for marking a preferred occupation.
What I have done for diagrams where only one occupation is used is to use %INDI.OCCU[<99]% which shows the last occupation rather than the first.

Yes, the occupation is on the main tab ('front page') of the Property Dialog. I've just thought of a way to find if I may have 'corrupted' any Event occupations by deleting (as I think I may have done) any 'Scholar' occupations: to create two named lists - one for census record sources, another for all the Scholars mentioned in my first post. I would put each in record order and check all census source creations before the first Scholar record, i.e. I could have only deleted Scholars in the earlier part of my census records. It might be a bit unwieldy and time-consuing but at least it should do the trick. Hope this makes sense.

The scholar will be in an occupation event.
One posibility might be to do a query showing the occupation and the year of occupation and the age at event, so you can spot the 3 year old train drivers.
As it should only effect the first occupation this should be easy to do.
The attached Query shows all persons with a dated occupation and their age, sorted by age.

Thanks Jane, your query showed that I didn't have any geriatric school children! Earlier I had also looked at some of my first census sources and I couldn't find any 'would be scholars' without the scholar 'occupation' missing from their events screen, i.e. I probably dreamt that I had deleted some 'scholars' in the past...

Jane, further to my last message, your query serendipitously found a couple of errors the other way round, e.g. one of my seven year olds was apparently 'Secretary to a Temperance Society' rather than a scholar!

...actually I was incorrect in my last message about them being the other way round. It did show me exactly what your query had demonstrated. Sometime in the past I must have spotted 'scholar' on an individual's main tab of the Property Dialog and I changed it to the correct 'adult' occupation. This in turn changed it to the incorrect occupation in his Events section - which of course I've now corrected.
