The Genealogist.co.uk?

Has anyone used this service? How does it compare with Ancestry.co.uk? I have already made my dissident views on Ancestry clear in another thread!

I think ancestry is far better. The genealogist has limited indexes for 1841 census returns and some later ones, but they are patchy. Before taking out a subscription make sure the areas you are interested in are covred adequately. Also beware of the all-inclusive subscription - it does not include everything, for example ships crew lists are not included. Be very careful before you spend any money.

Thanks Irene, that was helpful. It seems all of them have their short comings.

Barry - did you ever make a decision between ancestry or thegenealogist? I am a newcomer about to make the same choice!

Hi Ralf,
I stayed with Ancestry because it does have much wider coverage but I still get frustrated with its inadequate search engine. Another recent posting to this forum describes how to get round its BMD failings. I take the view that if I pay for something it should work, not have to spend hours looking for work arounds. Perhaps we should start a manual of how to beat Ancestry?
