Is it possible to shorten the vertical - generation separating - lines on a diagram, so that it prints more compactly?

It depends a little on which diagram you are using.
On the All relations diagram the key field is the number of rows per generation. This controls the detail level as well as the heigh, but is a good control.
Using the right click on page bounds will allow you control the overall size of the diagram. The maximum number of possible text lines controls the height of the boxes, so reducing the detail in the boxes reduces the height as does placing the pictures to the left hand side. Please reply to let me know how you get on.
