Family Historian User Group

I have decided that the best way to investigate my family tree is to have a second copy of FH on a laptop with images of all my documents (BMD and census etc). I will then have this data available to view on my laptop wherever I go researching.

My desktop pc at home will always be the master copy which I will update.
To enable me to do this I have in 'My Documents' a folder 'Geneology' in which I have structured subfolders to contain Gedcom files and images of the different document types. I will then backup and copy the 'Geneology' folder with all its subfolders to my laptop to keep it updated. All the links to the images on the laptop will be the same as on the desktop pc.

I have several custom diagrams and I know they are saved in 'All usersApplication dataCalico PieFamily HistorianDiagramsCustom' and similarly with custom queries in ......Family HistorianQueriesCustom. I would therefore need to tranfer this 'Family History' folder as well.

My question is:.. Are there other files that I need to consider transfering? Also how are the Preferences held...are these in a file or in the registry.

Most preferences seem to be held in the Registry. Using both

HKCUSoftwareCalico Pie

and

HKLMSoftwareCalico Pie

Most of the important files are in the application data area. I find most of the 'stuff' in the registry is quick to set up as its the options etc.

If you will be transfering over a net work you could keep all the files in-sync using a program like SyncBack (I use the freeware version of this program all the time)

What operating system do you use. (I have XP Pro.)

All you need to do is create a 'Briefcase' on your laptop (Right click on the desktop/New/Briefcase) and copy all the files from your desktop into it.

You can work on either set of files and then just update in briefcase. It will tell you which are the newer files and you then confirm to update the others.
