* Marriage witnesses

I'm sure I saw something about this either here or on the mailing list but how best does one record marriage witnesses in FH? I believe it was something like setting up a custom event for each couple and recording the names in there - and then cross-reference these to the relevant sources.

Can anyone help?

If you click on the Mailing List option, change the search year to 2005 and enter witness in the search the threads will come up.

I've now set this up as a family custom attribute. The template I'm using is {couple} had as {label} {date} {place}. I just fill in the names of the witnesses and the date. The date seems a bit superfluous however as the reports that you create then state the marriage date a second time. I don't bother filling in the place. Because of the date duplication I might well edit them out. The sentence reads something like: They had John Smith & David Jones as marraige witnesses on 16 Septemeber 1906.

If it helps, I set up a custom event for marriage witness as
{individual} was a {label}{date}{_place} with witness as the event/attribute. entering the place with 'at the marriage of (couples name)'. One then gets a sentence that reads e.g. 'John Doe was a witness on 21 July 1864 at the marriage of Fred Smith and Mary Bloggs'

Thanks Phil but I think I'll stick with my version. I copied your syntax into the custom fact set and it came up with some strange results. I would have to change all the inputs to make the sentence make sense.
