BP married PN had 2 children MP and VP
PN died
BP married again VH (maiden name)
Hence 2 step children MM and EM
Kept fathers name
Is this the way that it should be?

That diagram would imply Emma and Martin are descendants of Brian P, you might want to add 'adopted' status to those children in that marriage.

If you center the diagram on the couple BP and VH you will be able to see all the children and both earlier spouses.

Are the children from Val H's first marriage.

If so add a spouse for Val H and then make the children members of that marriage rather than Brian P's marriage to Val H.

Hope this makes sense.
