adding children

Post by Tonybee » 29 Jan 2006 03:55

Please can some one tell me if it is possible to add an additional child and details to a family, which is of an age between two others.
So far the only way I can enter a new child is by moving all the others.

I am sure there is an easy way, but so far I cannot find it.

Thanks........

Tony,
I always use the 'Re-order out of sequence' option under the tools menu. That will arrange various items into Date order, incluing children.

Alternatively use Diagram editing and click and drag to add the child between two existing ones (see chapter 5 in the manual).  For example in the tree below if you click on either Bill Jones or Tina Adams and drag down between Ron and John.

A dotted line box will appear.

Let go the mouse button at this point and you will be asked if you want to add a son, a daughter or an existing record.  Chose whichever and the property window for the new child appears to fill in the details.  After entering the details go and look at the properties for the parents and you will see the new child has been added between the first two.

Diagram editing is very powerful and I recommend it as a fast way to grow a tree.  If you visit an elderly relative and take a laptop along, you can just keep adding people's names as they talk.

Thanks Richard Thanks Dave, that has saved me so much hassle.

That's one of the things I really like about FH, there's more than one way to achieve things so you can use whichever you prefer.
