Duplicates in main navigation pane

Post by miles » 16 Jan 2006 18:20

Some how I have managed to duplicate a whole family ie.  The husband appears to have two wives of the same name and the wife two husbands of the same name and either spouse has identical children.  On checking the records list there appear to be no duplicates at all, so I can not merge these records. When you navigate from the children to the parents, the program asks which of two identical couple you want, but worst of all the diagram treats the family as a man with two wives and prints out the same family twice with all the descendants.  I suspect that this problem arose from merging two files, something which I usually avoid by entering new people manually.  How do I rectify this??  Any ideas.

I wonder if you have two identical family records for the same people. I'm sure there is an easier way to do this but you could try the following. Make sure your file is backed up first.

1) Select Tools menu then Record Window Options and select the option to Always Show Families from the Record Type Display Options at the bottom. Press OK
2) On the main Record Window you will now see a Families Tab. Select this and look for two identical records for the same couple. If you are absolutely certain the records have the same info in them then delete one of the two records.

Assuming this solves the problem you may want to hide the Families tab again by going back into the Record Window Options.

Thanks Nick - yes I managed to solve it on the same lines, by going into the records window, clicking on the + box against the name and sure enough under both husband and wife there was a duplicate spouse together with their family and I deleted the duplicates successfully from there. I just wish I had spotted this error before I got 3/4 through sticking together a 40 page chart - so I am now starting again - if I can bear to! Thanks again, Miles

To late for this one, but don't forget you can always use the merge records option for duplicates
