please can someone help/
i am trying to add photos to my Family Historian. But although they are all ok to view on my computer as soon as they appear on FH they become as if too big. Not sure of the correct term but pictures appear just blocks of colour. I have tried reducing the size but it makes no difference.[smile]

Which version of FH are you using, make sure you have V2.3 this should include a zoom function. I think this was added in 2.2
If you are on 2.3 check the zoom function at the top.
If its still not display, please detail what format are you using for your photos.

As you mentioned pictures are just blocks of colour it sounds as though you are zoomed in very close to the picture. I think Jane is wondering if you need to zoom out.

Tools menu, 'Work with Multimedia Objects'
You will see a drop-down list of sizes as well as an 'Autosize' button next to the list which ought to be pressed in I think.
Whereabouts in FH are your pictures appearing as blocks of colour? Is it in the Properties dialogues?, in reports?, in trees?

Thanks Nick but hasn`t helped. Autosize doesn`t improve the quality just reduces the dimesions. Its hard to explain without the technical jargon but its like when you have a photo that much too big and you get no detail.
i`m trying to put themin objects linked to the record. Goes in fine but the quality changes

Hi Hilary,
Could you up load a screen shot so we can see how it looks, that might help with the resolution of your problem. (You can use the ALT+PrintScreen combintion when the window is displayed, and then past this as a new image in an art program to create the screen shot).
Also could you describe the step you take to add the image, agin this might help with the resolution.

sorry, do not seem able to copy the picture - have been trying fr the last half hour!!
other ideas?
I insert the pictures thus:-
On individual open properties then object.
On main screen - insert, pictures, then choose one from 'stock' and in it goes. Except it is not as it should be.
Looks a bit like the 'who is this ' pictures they dpo on television, except it is just possible to see who it is!!

Sorry - am I being a bit thick here?
Would you be so patient to explain exactly how?
I`m operating on Widows 98 so couldd this be why I am having trouble?

Hillary,
When you post you reply to the forum, just under the text box you will see a link with the text 'Upload Image/Family Historian File (.jpg ,.gif,.png or .fh*)'. After typing your message, click this link, and then browse to drive location on your computer where you saved the image, and select it. Then click the upload and it should be attached to the post on the forum.

I have just tried as you suggested. fine!1 the picture uploads fine but looking as it should - not as it appears in FH.
I wonder if there is a problm with the programm as I manage to place these pictures elsewhere with no problem??

Hilary,
Thats why i asked if you could upload it to the format, or if you perfer to email to me. I can then try attaching it to a dummy file to see if it is a image issue or somthing within FH that just does not like your file.

It would still help if you could do a screen capture and upload that so people can see what you see in FH, I have attached hundreds of jpg photos with out problems. Can you confirm you are saving them as jpgs and not jpg2000's with jpg extensions.

Hi Hilary,
I saved the picture, and attached it into a test file in FH with no problems and it displays no problem, see attached screen shot.
If you expand all the details on the individual, this is the details from the inserted image as it appears on the screen.
Now there is a small possible that the process or uploading onto the forum has fixed the file. Could you email me a copy using my email address of
r@sellens.demon.co.uk just to double check.

Just to let everybody know, i have been trying to help Hilary offline, with no success[frown]. I have not been able to recreate the effect she is seeing, and suppling her with working test files, she still gets the same problem.
I have no run out of ideas to try, so if anybody else has any ideas please jump in.

I have listed how to do the screen dump below, please forgive me if this is what you are already trying, I am just trying to make sure I put in all the steps to make sure you end up with what we need to help.
Open FH so that it shows the problem.
Now press the Alt and Print Screen (Prnt Scrn on a lap top) keys at the same time, this will copy the FH window to your clipboard so it can be copied to a graphics application. Release the two keys.
Start Microsoft Paint. This should be under the the Start Menu, Accessories folder (I have XP so I can't be certain where this is on 98 ).
In Paint click on the Edit menu and select Paste. This will paste your screen shot into Paint; it can get confusing here as it looks like you are within FH when all you really have is an image of it.
In the Microsoft Paint File menu click on Save As, and then change the Save As Type box to JPEG. Give the file a name and save it somewhere handy like on the desktop.
Go to the FHUG website and upload the file you saved from Paint in the same way you uploaded the original image.
The reason I suggest to use Paint rather than another graphics program is it is a fairly basic program so not much can go wrong, it will resize the image to fit whatever you paste in and the jpeg conversion is fairly well compressed but still readable.

I am still stuggling with this, but many thanks to all who have tried to help.
If I find a way to send an image of the problem I wwill do so as I realise that this will help enourmously. In the meantime as I said I am trying alsorts!!
Its very frustrating. i thought I`d cracked it when I found out photos should be saved as a link not embedded, but its made no difference. I would love to know if aanyone out there has had the same problem??
Thanks again everyone
