Generic 'In Census' Queries???

Post by duncan_a » 03 Jan 2006 16:58

Hi all

I've been trying to make sense of queries, but, being none too bright on the programming front, have failed miserably...

I'm wanting a query that will list individuals who 'should' be in a particular census i.e. for 1901, born between 1816 and 1900 inclusive (1901-85years to the year before the census)and no record of death before 1901...
If that makes sense?

With it I can then generate a list of individuals to search for in the various census indexes.

Has anybody done this or could help?

Thanks

Duncan

Generic 'In Census' Queries???

If you look in the Downloads, there is one called Census - The Missing Years, I think it is wonderful. It shows names and dates of birth/death then you can see which census returns you have found them on. You can spot gaps and duplicates very quickly. I think the writer of this query is wonderful!

Generic 'In Census' Queries???

Hi Irene

I've got that one and, whilst very useful, it doesn't do exactly what I need...

I want to be able to, say, produce a list of all the individuals who SHOULD appear on the 1871 Census.

'Census - The Missing Years' produces a list of individuals who have a source already alocated to them that they have already appeared on one or more census.

Thats fairly simple.

Just use the row area to
add all people born after 1816
exclude people born after 1901
exclude people died before 1901

To make it flexible use a parameter name for startyear and endyear

Generic 'In Census' Queries???

Hi Jane

Thanks for that - I now have something that works!!!

I would like to have a column for 'Age at Census' and another to indicate if I already have a reference to the relative Census for the individual.

As I want to achieve results Census by Census I am, at the moment, creating individual queries for each census and have the following for the 1901...

Columns
Individual INDI A
Birth.Date INDI.BIRT.DATE:COMPACT
Death.Date INDI.DEAT.DATE:COMPACT

Rows
Add if %INDI.BIRT.DATE:YEAR% was later than 1816
Exclude if %INDI.BIRT.DATE:YEAR% was later than 1901
Exclude if %INDI.DEAT.DATE:YEAR% was earlier than 1901

Is it possible to have a 'Drop-Down' box for a choice of values to enter? i.e. 'Which Census?' with the drop-down having 1841, 1851, 1861, etc. as the available choices... That way one query would fit all by 'Add if %INDI.BIRT.DATE:YEAR% was later than(selected year-85)', etc.

Not currently. Which is why I suggested the start and end dates.

Obviously its easy to add another parameter for census date and use the =ageat function, but you can not do maths, I understand v3 will allow references to events by date but that is not possible V2, which will help with census management.
