Okay, have found most things. But where is the list of locations/places already used (I like this as it avoids creating several locations, spelt or worded slightly differently, which are actually the same place). A bit like the list of sources only for places. Can't find it in the help.

To my knowledge Fran this does not exist in this version of FH, I believe it may be in the Wish List, why not check and if not pop it in. This is one of the great things about this s/w. Try doing that with some of the American products.

I have added a link to GEDPLAC.exe which may help when checking location descriptions.

Now, I'm probably being very thick, here - I have downloaded the file to the same directory where I keep my GEDCOM files (as it says) - what do I do now to check locations already held??????[confused]

Cant help you here as I have not used the program but I am sure Jane will drop you a note with the answer.

Simply double click the program and then open your file, from memory it will then display a list of locations, I think the site or the read me has information on how to use it.

Thanks, Jane.  It does list the places, which is helpful.  Hopefully the full facility that I need will be incorporated in the next version of FH.

I've just had the same problem as Fran: I've been filling in birthplaces and assumed that as my ancestors were all born in the same 2 or 3 places I'd be able to use a simple copy and paste -but apparently not! I had to type the same phrase 20 or 30 times. Thanks for the Gedplace link Jane: BUT why does it have to be so complicated and require a special link to do such a simple thing? And: looking at online help doesn't help much because unless you know the exact way the topic is worded you can't find it - and if you knew, you would have found it already!

I can't compare FH to any other genealogy software, as this is the first one I've used - but I must admit I do find it rather irritating at times!

A couple of suggestions.
You can use copy and paste for locations or anything else. CTRL-C and CTRL-V do work.

In the help I suggest using the Find option and let windows build the word list. If you can not find something then this site or the mailing list are there to help. Questions are always welcome.
