Arthur appears twice in one census

Post by paulrun26 » 15 Dec 2005 21:59

I have an Arthur Brightman who, it appears, is input twice on one census. He appears with his family on RG12/1243 F58 p8 but also with his grandmother on RG12/1243 F58 p7. I suppose it is reasonble to assume that his parents input their son but he was actually with his grandmother on census night.
Any else come across this? or have any other ideas?

Yes I have come across similar double census entries in the past and I think your assumption will be correct.

I have dealt with your double, I also have a family member in two places, at the army baracks and at home with his father. I detailed both, and make a best guess as to where he was. I think its quite common for children to be farmed out to relations living close by as your references would suggest and perhaps listed the family in total and grandma listed the child she had staying with her.

I also have a double, once at home with wife and family but also visiting his daughter and son-in-law a few streets away. He must have raced the enumerator and won!

I too have come across a double entry in my researches. My ancestor was recorded in birmingham and wolverhampton on the same night. It caused me no end of trouble to sort out but was worth the effort because is revealed another three generation link to his in laws. Who says black clouds dont have silver linings!![grin]

I have a similar situation, except the whole family appears twice. Firstly James (ship keeper), Eliza and their 3 sons are to be found in Chatham Kent (RG9-481-38-18). Then again they all appear on board HMS Plover. James is now an Able Seaman. (RG9-4479-7-11). Not only that but their ages are also slightly different (35/29) and (33/28). Even so there is little doubt they are the same family.
