Xmas Presents

Post by miffy » 12 Dec 2005 08:09

I hope you dont mind me asking for advice about buying a budget program for my nieces, who have become interested in family history.  They are 8 & 10 years old, whilst I would love to buy them FH Im afraid its too expensive so can anyone recommend a budget program that they would find easy to use?
Many thanks, and Merry Christmas to you and all your family.[grin]

You could buy one of the geneaology magazines that come with a CD (Your family Tree is my personal choice). These have various programmes available to try. Some are freeware or fully functional but time limited and others without time limit but with restricted features. I have Family tree maker and Legacy 6 running on my PC. These work fine in their own right.
I always input data into FH and import the Gedcom from the file that FH created. I can then 'cherry pick' some of the features that FH cannot provide.

What about downloading the free PAF programme from the LDS site. If you could then copy that to a cd you could give that to your neices. The only problem with PAF is that you cannot print out diagrams using the free version.

Hi,

Why not try Famtree, I used it for many years before moving to FH. Free download (limited to 50(?) people) but registration is only £10. Can also print charts.
Well worth the money.

Many thanks for your sugestions, I shall look at current mags, but am rather impressed with Famtree as it prints the diagrams.  [grin]

Hi,
You can also try Kith and Kin.
It is a shareware program from U.K where you can ‘navigate’ and edit the tree, in a way similar to FH.
I think Kith and Kin kind of tree is the best approach to deal with couples with common ancestors, as it can ‘close’ the tree and therefore there are no duplicate boxes or branches.
