Is there an easy way to remove entries from the baptised field and put them in the christened field instead? At the moment I am always left with 'christened' left empty on the bottom of the events list. Alternatively is there a way to stop 'christened' from appearing in the events?

FH never puts any data in fields automatically so you or one of your co-researchers must be using the field.

The quick way is to use a text editor to do a search and replace the GEDCOM codes.

To delete blank events simply
select the redundant event and click the red x it will delete the event.

Is there a tutorial for editing the codes?

Make sure you have a backup of your GEDCOM file. Then open it up using a text editor such as Windows Notepad (Do not use a word-processor such as Microsoft Word as it will probably make a mess of your file).

Here is an example of what you are looking for:

0 @I1026@ INDI
1 NAME Joseph /Knight/
1 SEX M
1 BIRT
2 DATE 1847
1 BAPM
2 DATE 31 OCT 1847
2 PLAC Grappenhall, Cheshire
2 ADDR St Wilfrid
1 CHR
1 FAMC @F244@
1 CHAN
2 DATE 23 AUG 2005
3 TIME 18:36:33

The '1 BAPM' shows the start of a baptism event for this individual. The lines following it that start with '2' show information about the baptism (i.e. the date, place, address). The line beginning '1 CHR' shows the start of a chistening event but there are no lines immediately following it starting with a 2 and therefore this would be a blank christening event with no information in it. Therefore you could delete that line and change the 1 BAPM to a 1 CHR as shown below.

0 @I1026@ INDI
1 NAME Joseph /Knight/
1 SEX M
1 BIRT
2 DATE 1847
1 CHR
2 DATE 31 OCT 1847
2 PLAC Grappenhall, Cheshire
2 ADDR St Wilfrid
1 FAMC @F244@
1 CHAN
2 DATE 23 AUG 2005
3 TIME 18:36:33

This could be done more quickly using Find/Replace within Notepad.

Hope this makes some sense. Do make sure you back-up your file first and don't blame me if it all goes wrong!
