Genes reunited upload problems

Post by Guest » 08 Aug 2005 13:30

I have been unable to upload my ged file to Genes Reunited for several weeks. I have emailed them repeatedly and only received one reply and apology.

The problem is that when uploading I just get the message that it will be updated shortly and that I will get an email soon. No email arrives and no update occurs. When you look at their FAQs it talks about supporting uploads from FH 2.1 (no mention of 2.3.5) and about only supporting gedcom 5.5 with ANSI character sets.

Can anyone tell me how to export a ged file that complies? Or has anyone had the problem and sorted it?

[mad] Genes Reunited do not seem to want to help much!

Genes reunited upload problems

I have seen reports of problems previously, its a problem with their import code normally.

Try creating a copy of your file.
Run the file validation from the Files menu over your file.

Use the split tree routine to delete
All Sources
All multimedia
All Notes
All Repository
All submitter records.

(as far as I know Genes don't need any of the above)

Do you get other mails from their systems, don't forget to check your spam filter system if you get no mail at all.

I might also try splitting out a small part of your tree and test the upload with that first. Personally I have only ever uploaded a 'small' section of my tree based on the All relatives Query so that my genes tree only contains people in my core families.

[smile] Thanks a lot Jane, using your advice and split tree enabled me to upload a ged file. It is a shame that Genes reunited don't suggest that sort of thing rather than say they are sorting it and keep trying. Still never mind eh!

The question now is where did the extra 180 (or so) people it tells me I have got (only about 520 in FH) come from? [confused]. But I can live with that for the time being.

At a guess it creates 'blank' spouses where families do not have both parents defined.

Genes reunited upload problems

Thank you SO much for the advice in this thread. I have spent the last few days becoming more and more irritated with GR for their failure to indicate what the errors were that prevented my file from uploading or to respond to emails asking for advice.

I did get one reply, telling me that no-one else had a problem - which one glance at their forums showed to be palpably false.

Anyway, one split tree later and the file loaded and installed in a couple of minutes!

Thanks again,

Argel
