Various wishes: please can I have.....!

Post by pafwilson » 06 Aug 2005 04:04

Having used FH for over six months now, and been on the whole very well satisfied with the programme, I wanted to find out if there are others who would like certain features which I would kill for!

1) Being able to format text in notes.
2) Being able to control the number and size of photos in reports etc. so that I don't merely have the choice of deciding to have (say) 2 images for all relatives, but that I could choose the number (and size) for each relative.  For example, I have wanted to produce a Descendents by Generation Report, and have some images which are photos and others which are documents.  The documents are not legible often unless they are very large, but this forces me to make the photos disproportionately large.  I sort of got round this problem by moving the document to the spouse and  calling it the spouses document, which I can make a different size, but then, I do actually want spouses' photos also, so it wasn't too good a solution.

3) Being able to make a single line between any two people in the GEDCOM

4) Sorting out 'double links', such as when two sisters marry two brothers, or when someone marries (for the second time) their son-in-law's sister.  My tree has quite a few of these double links, some more direct than others.

5) I also really would like what I have seen another correspondent ask for which is the ability to make a GEDCOM from the people in a diagram or report, easily, at the touch of a button (I know how to do it now, but it is a fiddly process).  Linked to this is the ability to expand on a tree at will with anyone else who is part of the GEDCOM.  For example I often want to do an ancestor diagram, but to take one or two particular ancestors on the diagram, and be able to click on their names and get their descendents added to the tree WITHOUT having to do the rather cumbersome 'all relatives' tree, which (it seems to me) wastes a lot of space and is pretty useless to view on the computer, as one is compelled to have a certain number of 'bands' per generation even if those extra bands are often not used and you either see a significant part of the tree but can't read the writing because it's too small, or you can read the writing but you can only see a very small amount of relatives on the screen; but in any case you see a lot of blank space too.  (Am I doing something wrong??).

6) In printing reports with photos, I would like the report to be 'intelligent' in cutting out duplicate pictures: within the programme, it is great to have the same group photo come  up in each person's record who is in the photo, but it is annoying to have the same picture printed out again and again in a report.  If there were a dialogue box come up when the report is being processed saying something like 'xxx multimedia will be displayed in the following records; please tick for each record to confirm whether you would like this picture to be displayed for those records.

I always link my document pictures to a source for that document (handy if the document refers to more than one person in the tree).  This would eliminate the problem you report in point 2 (although it won't help if you have varying numbers of real photos!).

On point 6, I usually just select a head shot of each individual from group photos for use in reports/diagrams.  The ability to do this, I believe, is one of the strengths of Family Historian over other packages.

Some of your other points already exist on the Wish List - make sure you vote for them to raise them up the priority list.

BTW - shouldn't this posting be in the un-processed Wish List Requests?
