I am just begining my tree and have bumped into a brick wall rather sooner than I expected, please can anyone advise. The story goes, according to family sources, my grandfather was illegitamit and his bith was not registered, nor was he declred in the 1901 census.  The family were Primitve Methodists so do not apear in parish records.  I do have a date of birth 23 Dec 1892 how can I trace this back??

I presume you have checked the GRO indexes and the 1901 Census yourself?

Have you researched any of the Non Conformist records? There should be a baptisum registered with them.

Does the fathers name appear on his marriage certificate.

It's best to check everything yourself, as Jane commented. To all intents and purposes, my grandfather wasn't on the online 1901 census, until I tried spelling variations and found him. All due to a transcription error.
It's been recrified now, I believe.
If you give a few more details, I'll have a look for you.

I have been told that when he went to collect his old age pension , there was a big problem as his birth had not been registered. As I type this Im wondering if his birth was registered at that time and will check to see how I can investigate further. All this even though he fought in WW1

Were you able to get his army records, these will probably show family relationships. I would still double check the GRO indexes and the local registry office, under both his surname and if different his mothers maiden name and/or fathers surname.

Where did you find the bit in 1901? I've got an Excel list and have a fair idea which one he is. Let me know as before.

I've a hine of Eliza as well.

My grandmother, Jeanie was born 1899 and never had a birth cert. She used her baptism cert for her pension. We finally found her birth registered under the name Jinny - her mother was illiterate and the name was written the way she said it, so check for alternative spellings.
