What ISP do you have, do they provide free web space with FTP uploading?

The gedmill pages need to be uploaded to a web server, but every ISP has slightly different instructions

If you have their broadband package you get some web space, but you would need to check out their instructions.

The other option is RootsChat offer freeweb space for Family history websites. Just sign up on the site and request space from the admin and thats it. There is a forum with lots of hints and tips on uploading the files and what programs to use.

Have you read through the tutorial, you are already to stage 6 in it

TUTORIAL: Help with building your website.

You just need an FTP program to copy all your files which are on the PC on to the Web Server.

I am not sure what you mean. To access the pages using your web browser you
type
http://xxxxx.rootschat.net/

where xxxx is the domain you requested.
You will see a holding page, headed Your very own family history page.
Which will stay until you upload new pages using an FTP program.

This is why I am getting confused I am typing the address as given to me but nothing appears only a rootschat page saying
'we cannot find page you are looking for'

Have you had the confirmation e-mail yet?

It does take a few hours normally as its not an automated process as far as I know one of the admins have to set it up for you.

We have a certain amount of webspace allocated to us from the ISP - in our case Demon. So, publishing is to there, via FTP. I bought WsFTP_Pro but find the free CoreFTPLE the best and an absolute breeze to use.
BUT, you will need webspace. Surefish, the christian Aid site is very good. I have no religious interest in this but the site gives multiple web pages, per e-mail address and is free. I suppose that the proviso that 'hits' end up drawing attention to the aid thing is a small price to 'pay' for free sites. Perhaps I should be guilty!
Get a cheap domain and re-direct to the free site and - away you go. FTP is easy. There are plenty of articles in the forum about other methods of web upload but not all work, depending on you ISP.
Have fun & enjoy.

Hi Jane the problem is as far as I can see I have done as the program tells me too so I would not know where to change anything I have done
I have been through the help file with the FTP program and I must admit a lot of it is way above my head so I am going to abandon the idea
once again thank you for trying to help
