I wish to place a column in the record window showing the individual's Ahnentafel number.
Will you please instruct me how to achieve this?

I don't think this is possible as you would need to provide aa second individual to the function which was the root person to compute the number from. Since the Ahnentafel shows the relationship between two people

On the records window there is no root person.

Is it possible therefore to nominate oneself as the root person, similar to the Query window (ancestors), to enable a column of Ahnentafel numbers to be generated?

Not to my knowledge.
You could always add a custom ID for your direct ancestors and display that, or simply add them all to a list, which you can do by saving the results of the ancestors query to a list and add a column with the list in, which is what I do.
