Cant find a Birth Certificate.

Post by David_Lewis » 29 Jun 2005 18:42

Im trying to find a birth certificate for a George Lewis who I know was baptised in Birley near Hereford on 28th June 1846...and his parents James and Elizabeth Lewis Match those given on the 1851 Census.

I thought at first that Births in Birley came under Hereford but three possible birth certificates I ordered all turned out to be the wrong ones.

A little more reserach revealed that Birley births actualy came under Weobley so I tried three more possibilities but those too arent the one I am looking for.

So it begs the question Is it possible for a birth as late as 1846 not to have been registered...I.E there is no birth certificate.

Just as a footnote Birley is a tiny Hamlet north of Hereford and at first I couldnt locate the parish register in the Archives at Hereford but then I found out that because the hamlet is stuill so small there havent been many baptisms there and the register is still in use!!

I suspect it was not registered or it was missed from the index, if it was the latter you could try sourcing the certificate from the registry office which covers Birley direct, that way you can write a covering letter with the details, I know this can be a very variable thing as some offices are more helpful than others, but it might be worth a try.

Cant find a Birth Certificate.

I have a birth in 1856 which appears not to have been registered. The person was christened in Holborn in that year and the census from 1861 to 1901 are all consistent in giving her place of birth as Holborn and her age equating to a birth in 1856. We searched the indexes for years either side of the date and even paid the GRO for a one year search either side but no registration could be found.

Do you know mother's maiden name? I have instances where the christening is shown with the 'fathers' name but the birth certificate (before marriage) is under mothers name with no father listed.
