Last night ancestry posted what appears to be the whole of England and Wales 1861 Census with name index.

Thanks for pointing that out Jane, I've just had a quick look and found some GG grandparents that I new very little about apart from DOB and place. It showed my Great grandfather with a brother and 5 sisters I did not know about and an even greater bonus his parent were living with them! So that has been a super addition for me![smile]

Ive also noticed that 1837 online are catching up with the 1861 census.

Its by no means complete but I have found their facility to search by address usefull.

I had found some relatives on the 1871 census in London but couldnt find them in the 1861 census at first. A search on all the names in turn provided nothing usefull.

I then thought I'd check to see who was living at the same address 10 years earlier and found the same family. Unfortunately most of the gamily names were almost illegible but because I had the names from 1871 I could decipher them..the ages occupations and birthplaces all tied up with the 1871 Census. In the 1861 census the names had just been transcribed as A row of Asterisks, which explains why I couldnt find them using a name search.
