Blanked boxes when printed out

Post by andreas » 11 Apr 2005 20:49

I've just bought the program and installed version 2.1 and upgraded to 2.3.

I've opened an existing gedcom fil made with another program and are viewing the file in diagram window.

When I print it out, there is no text printed in the boxes, however the boxes and lines comes allright.

Another error is that when I put on the option 'Relation ship description' to both sides, it prints the description mirrored (I have to use a mirror in order to read it correct).

My printer is Brother HL-1230 and I'm using XP professional.

I've tried to reinstall the program and print it from the 2.1 version, and it is the same result.

Can anyone help me?

I presume your other software prints correctly?

my first thought would be to check all the settings on your printer.

This is completely new one on me and my initial thought would be a problem with the printer driver for your brother. Some printers have all sorts of fancy features to invert and mirror images.

Once you have tried changing the printer driver, it may be worth checking you have the latest version of the driver.

To my knowledge this problem has not been reported before and as you have an unusual printer make I think thats where I would start looking. In addition make sure you are telling FH to print in black and white.

Andreas

I don't remember coming across anything like this before.  Is your diagram a very big one?  Some printer drivers internally use a small (16-bit) coordinate system, even if they are used with XP (where everything is supposed to be 32-bit).  If you think that might be the problem, try printing a small diagram and see if that works.  If it does, try experimenting with Large Chart Settings on the Dimensions tab of the Diagram Options dialog (and read the Help that goes with it).  I have to say that I agree with Jane that it sounds like a printer driver problem.  Also if text doesn't appear, try changing the font colour (or as Jane says, using the black-and-white option).  Is it possible that the printer is trying to print white on white for some reason?

Another thought: Are the boxes very small?  Some printers may use their own fonts, and refuse to print at all if the text would be below a threshold size.  Again, check your printer options.  If there is a 'print text as graphics' option (or similar), try using that.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my recently installed FH version 2.1.8. I am getting boxes and lines printed out but no text inside the boxes. I am using a brother 2460 series and have tried changing the font colour to black, increasing the size of the font, using bold ... all to no avail. It is really strange as the print preview shows the chart perfectly, including text - but still only blank boxes when printing. Please help. The printer has no problem with any other programmes I use. It is the office printer and used for printing everything from powerpoint to emails. I'm wondering if it is a bug on the CD itself?[confused]

Download the latest update 2.3.5 from this site. There were some corrections to printing in 2.2 and 2.3. Also check the amount of memory installed in the laser against what the drivers think it has, as the laser may be running out of memory. Also make sure you have the latest drivers for the printer, not any default ones provided with windows.
