named lists and queries

I felt sure that this was covered in the help or elsewhere - but I can't find it! In order to split off a section of a tree I've been sent, in order to import it, I have created a named list for all the people I want to keep in the tree. I was then trying to delete from the larger tree everyone except those on my named list. According to the user manual, I can do this by creating a query and then using the split/merge files helper. However, I'm not confident creating my own custom query to deal with this, and couldn't find a customised one on the site. Has anyone already done this, or could anyone explain it very simply to me? I'm fairly computer-literate but get very easily confused when it looks like programming language...
Thanks in advance.

Do the split
1. Make a new copy of the file using save as
2. Select split tree helper from the File menu.

Dear Jane
Thank you so much for this 'idiot's guide'. This idiot found it very easy to follow, and I'm now feeling very smug at having completed a complex merge. Thanks as always for your prompt response.
Best
