Data references for diagram, conditional ones

I would like to have EITHER birth or christening date, respectively either death or burial date in my diagrams. In Germany, sometimes you get the christening date from the records, but not the birth date. For this reason, I would like to use a data reference which conditionally includes the christening date, if no birth date is given for the individual.
Something like this:
{if birth date empty} chr. %INDI.CHR.DATE:COMPACT%

And the same for deaths/burials.

Problem is that I wasn't able to find out how to phrase the condition in the brackets. Does anybody know??

TIA

Sabine,

I wanted to do the same but apparently it is not possible to do this yet. It is a wish list item. See the wish list for the item 'If construct to select one of a selection of a field'

Although it's not a perfect solution, take a look at the 'LifeDates()' function. The Help File states that 'LifeDates returns birth and death dates in a convenient format.  If birth and/or death dates are not available, it will return baptism, christening and/or burial dates instead, if these are known'.

As a Query Column and in Reports, '=LifeDates(%data reference%)' will return:
(a) Year of Birth (if known) eg '1790';
(b) Year of Baptism if no Birth Date eg 'bap.1790';
(c) Year of Death eg '1790-1850';
(d) Year of Burial if no Dath year eg 'bap.1790-bur.1850'

In the above examples you would substitute the term 'data reference' with the reference appropriate to your Report of Query. For an Individual Query, just =LifeDates() should be OK, or =LifeDates(%INDI%). For the LifeDates of a Child within a Family Query, you would need to use =LifeDates(%FAM.CHIL>%)

Not a perfect solution, I know, but in the absence of support for conditional functions, or in the absence of program support for the specific events as above, this is as close as I have managed to come.

Ross and Gerry,

thanks for the answers!

I'll think about using LifeDates, but originally I wanted full dates and places, not only the years. By now, I decided to include all four events - makes the boxes pretty big, but does contain what I want ...

I'll take a look at the wish list.

Talking of that - what is the difference between baptism and christening?
