Twins?

Post by arishmell » 29 Jan 2005 19:26

I'm a very new user, but I've been working through the tutorial and building my own family tree at the same time.  (I love the program, by the way, and I'm very impressed by the detail in the manual and the online support.)

I am wondering if there is any way to indicate twins (or other multiple births) in a diagram?  The birth years are displayed and may give some indication, but it would be possible to have two separate births in one year.

I use a custom attribute (Twin) and add that to both twins.

You can then use

%INDI._ATTR-TWIN[1]% to show twins on diagrams or in queries and reports.

On the Events tab click on the add button, select attributes, click custom attribute and type in Twins.

Once you have one pair set up the attribute will always appear in the list.

On the Diagram text schemes which are maintained on Diagram Options Text Tab.

I still don't seem to be able to get it right. The diagram is just the same as it was and there's nothing on the the references to indicate that the two sisters I am trying to link are twins.

So you have an attribute showing on both sisters of Twins with the attribute field set to the name of the other twin like this

Add to the diagram text like

Hmmm,  followed this thread through aswell, and yes it works fine.  However, as there is only one 'narrative' for a Custom Event, and I had changed that to make sense of my other Custom event, the Narrative Report now prints: He was an Twin of 'Gillian''s party on board the .
How do we get around this one?

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. It works! I have several sets of twins, including one set born in 1844 called Elizabeth and Eliza. Obviously the shock of twins paralysed the imaginations of their parents. For some time I thought it must be a duplicate recording of a single birth until I found them both in a census.  I'm pleased to be able to mark them out.
