I have ordered my copy of FH and I am at present using FTM V9. Any advice on transferring my data from one to the other would be great. Should I just type it all in again(I have 376 individuals so it would be managable) or should I transfer by Gedcom? have there been any major problems? [smile]

Unless you want to take the opertunity to re-validate and check your sources there is no reason not to move the gedcom.
If you find large amounts of rejected data try the GEDFix for FTM on the downloads page. I moved my 2,500 people with not too much trouble.

Where has the GEDfix, refered to by Admin, for FTM download gone? I have looked for it all over the site but can't unearth it. I am interested as I convert FTM files to GEDCOM for use in Fam Historian and I hit a snag with nicknames not being transfered properly.

In Links under GEDCOM,then Gedfix.
You can find the program at
http://www.taubman.org.uk/gedcom/index.html
However I did have some problems with moving Nicknames as FTM stores them in a strange place. If you have problems let me know and I will take a look at the gedfix again.

Thanks for the reply, I found Gedfix eventually - but it doesn't help.
FTM saves a Gedcom with nicknames listed in a line below NAME as '1 ALIA /Kit/' for example. Then Gedfix seems to give a transation such that the ALIA line is changed to '2 _USED /Kit/' and FH doesn't appear to recognise that as a nickname. I haven't tried all the Gedcom variations that FTM can produce, just a couple.
If I open the original GED file in Wordpad and do a find and replace, making all 'ALIA' change to 'NICK' then FH lists the nickname OK.
There is a subtle difference between an alias, in FTM terms, and a nickname in Gedcom. Not a major problem, just a bit of a pain. There are a few other lines that don't get accepted by FH but I haven't worked out where they come from yet and they don't seem to make much difference.

I have also had the same problem but have managed to solve it, after some research.
IMPORTANT
==========
TRY THIS ON A COPY OF YOUR DATA FIRST
======================================
Open the GED file in a text editor such as Notepad - do not use a word processor.
Search for ALIA and replace it with NAME
This seems to work fine.
Hope this helps.
Dave
PS
To find the solution, I downloaded some test files from http://www.geditcom.com/gedcom.html
and loaded each of them into FH until I found one (TGC55C.ged)with an Alias (Alt Name), then searched the GED file to find out which tag was used.
